Born and raised in Tasmania, Ruby's connection to music began early. Although she experimented with several instruments as a child, everything changed the moment she picked up a guitar. From that first encounter, she knew she had found the instrument through which she would tell her stories. Growing up in Tasmania fostered her love of music, but the island's limited opportunities also fuelled an ambition to explore a wider creative world. When the chance came to move to Melbourne for university, she embraced it without hesitation.
It was in Melbourne that Ruby began developing as both a performer and songwriter. Regular appearances at university events and local venues gave her the opportunity to share stages with other emerging artists, learn from experienced musicians, and immerse herself in one of Australia's most vibrant live music communities. Those years helped shape her understanding of performance and provided the foundation for the artist she would become.
Life eventually led Ruby through Canberra and on to Goulburn, where she found the space and perspective necessary to continue growing creatively. The move came during the uncertainty of the Covid period, when lockdowns encouraged many people to reassess what mattered most. Seeking a lifestyle that balanced creativity, community and connection, she settled in Goulburn, a regional city close enough to both Canberra and Sydney to remain connected to the wider music scene while offering a place to put down roots.
Today, Goulburn plays an important role in Ruby's artistic life. As a regular performer at The Goulburn Club and venues throughout the region, she has developed a loyal local following and continues to refine her craft through live performance. Despite spending more than fifteen years performing, she remains most at home in intimate settings where genuine connections can be formed with an audience. Whether performing solo with an acoustic guitar or accompanied by piano, bass, drums, horns or strings, Ruby's shows balance heartfelt vulnerability, humour, energy and storytelling.
At the core of Ruby's songwriting is an unwavering commitment to honesty. Her songs are almost entirely autobiographical, inspired by real experiences and the people who have shaped her life. Relationships form the foundation of much of her material, though not always romantic ones. Family, friendship, grief, personal change and the connections that define us all appear throughout her work. Beginning most songs with melodies and fragments of musical ideas, Ruby gradually develops them into complete stories, allowing lyrics and music to evolve together through an organic creative process.
Her music reflects what she describes as "two competing parts of my heart." On one side sits the energetic, hook-driven songwriter inspired by artists like Avril Lavigne. On the other is a more reflective voice drawn toward intimate storytelling and songs rooted in family experiences. Produced with Stephen Lindsay of Old Binda Road Studio and working with several studio musicians, most notably Ben Malone, Polystyrene Smile represents the most complete expression of Ruby's artistic identity to date. Its title, drawn from a lyric in one of Ruby's favourite songs, serves as a fitting symbol for an album that examines the contrast between appearance and reality while searching for authenticity and meaning.
Following the release of her debut single across major streaming platforms, recognition has already begun to grow. Ruby is the Highland FM Artist of the Month for October and featured in Southern Tablelands Arts' Stories From The Studio series, offering audiences a deeper insight into her creative process and artistic journey.
With Polystyrene Smile launching at The Goulburn Club and further digital releases scheduled throughout the coming months, Ruby James stands at the beginning of an exciting new chapter.
